Mike and Dan’s Story

We have been in the business of helping people through life’s financial challenges for more than 60 years combined. In 2016, we decided to venture out and create our own firm, partnering with Commonwealth to provide a wealth of experience and smart technology to meet your needs.

In 2021, we decided to make another move. This time, the move was to a building we purchased in Historic Valley Junction. We have a desire to be a part of the rejuvenation of the area and make our contribution to the betterment of the community in which we live and work.

After visiting the Jordan House and learning the story of the founding of Valley Junction, it became apparent that we needed to change our name to Two Oaks Wealth.

It all began in 1846, when James C. Jordan, Valley Junction’s first settler, pitched a tent between two oak trees on the western side of the Des Moines border. “

Even though we have changed our location and name, we remain laser focused on one mission: helping you and your family meet your financial goals and secure the future you envision.

Mike is managing and founding partner of Two Oaks Wealth.  He has over 30 year of experience in the financial industry and believes his clients are better served when they can make informed decisions and takes pride in his ability to turn complicated concepts into understandable action items.

Michael Compiano graduated from University of Iowa with an Insurance degree in 1987.  He began his career when he joined Cigna Financial Advisors. His training included aspects of risk management, investment planning, financial planning, and estate planning with an emphasis on retirement planning.

Following Cigna Financial Advisors, Mike spent 7 years working for Lincoln Financial Advisors/Sagemark Consulting and 10 years working with Diversified Financial Group before he and business partner Daniel Porter decided to open their own firm, Legacy Capital Partners. This move was important to Mike as it has offered him the ability to work in an independent nature, which, in turn, allows him to put his clients first, last and always.

Currently, Mike holds four designations. These include the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®), Certified Funds Specialist® (CFS®) designations, and Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®). These designations provide him with extensive knowledge of both financial planning, investments and insurance.

Mike has always been very invested in his community on both a personal and business level.  He is a former board member of Freedom for Youth's Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser.  He is also affiliated with the Contributors Breakfast Club Foundation, which raises money to distribute annually through the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation to support charities benefiting children.

Daniel Porter is a managing and founding partner of Two Oaks Wealth.    He has 30 years of experience as a financial advisor, working closely with his clients to provide wealth counseling for all stages of life.

Since Daniel Porter was a child, mowing lawns for five dollars an hour, he’s been fascinated by the economy, from the basics of making money and the worth of an hour, to the various ways people interact financially and the importance of those interactions. He knew early in his life that the financial world was something that he wanted to be a part of.

In 1990, Dan graduated Iowa State University with a degree in Finance and began his career with American Express Financial Advisors and IDS Financial Services (now Ameriprise), he reflects fondly on the experience and the knowledge he gained in those first three years.  The next step in Dan’s career took him to Diversified Financial Group (DFG) as an independent financial advisor, where he acquired his CFP® certification.   This allows him to provide clients more in-depth financial planning services.

After twenty-three years with DFG building his relationships and practice, in 2016, it was again time for a change.  Dan and his business partner, Michael Compiano, founded Legacy Capital Partners, with the goal of independent advice while focusing on the client's entire financial picture.  Teaming up with Commonwealth Financial Network as their broker/dealer provided Legacy Capital Partners and clients the features, technology and products to help best meet their goals and objectives. Dan works with clients in all stages of life, but specializes in business owners, and doctors.  Dan also serves on the board of West Des Moines School Foundation.

Registered Financial Assistant

Shelly Kooiker joined our team in 2017 with 20+ years of experience in the industry. It all began as the receptionist at MassMutual, where she quickly grew to love the business, wanted to learn more, and decided to explore becoming registered as an advisor assistant and later received additional registrations to allow her some compliance oversight and knowledge.  After 12 years, she made the move to DFG, where she continued to act as a registered sales assistant, compliance backup and added payroll, and general office support to the OSJ. Although Shelly took a brief career change, she chose to return to her professional passion of working with clients and joined our team as a trusted colleague, familiar with our business philosophy and values having worked with her during her time at DFG.

She spends her days working closely with our clients as a main point of contact for administrative questions. Shelly enjoys the opportunity Commonwealth Financial Network and Two Oaks Wealth provides her, and she is eager to continue to learn and grow with the firm.

Shelly and her husband Lance, also known as Gramma and Papa, recently moved to an acreage and are enjoying the quiet/peaceful patio—that is until the family comes over! Their daughter Jadyn, a special education teacher; her husband Cory, also a teacher and coach; and their son Liam and twin daughters Maisie and Lakynn live close, so they get to enjoy family time on a regular basis. Their son, Lane, a Sgt. in the National Guard, currently on deployment, who is also Polk County Deputy, makes his permanent home in the area as well. So, some of the favorite pastime activities include a full house for family dinners, playing outside, splashing in the pool, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the hours of entertainment the grandchildren provide.
